Direct connect is a peer-to-peer file-sharing protocol. Direct connect clients connect to a central hub and can download files directly from one another.

Hubs feature a list of clients or users connected to them. Users can search for files and download them from other clients, as well as chat with other users.

History

NeoModus was started by Jonathan Hess in November, 1999 as a company funded by the adware "Direct Connect" while he was in high school . The first third-party client was called "DClite", which never fully supported the file sharing aspects of the protocol. Hess released a new version of Direct Connect, requiring a simple encryption key to initiate a connection, locking out third-party clients. The key was cracked, and the author of DClite released a new version of DClite compatible with the new software from NeoModus. Some time after, DClite was rewritten as Open Direct Connect with goals of having an MDI user interface and using plug-ins for file sharing protocols (similar to MLDonkey). Open Direct Connect also did not complete support for the full file sharing aspects of the protocol, but a port to Java did. Some time later, other clients such as DCTC (Direct Connect Text Client) and DC++ started popping up.

How to connect two PCs through the USB port for file sharing?
Q. I need to connect my desktop and laptop for file sharing. My desktop does not have an ethernet card. Found in some sites that an USB cross-link cable shall be used to setup a Direct Cable Connection between two PCs. Please let me know the step-by-step method to do the same and also some good brands of this type of cable.

A. It is slow, but here is a link to a product. You need a special USB cable. It also comes with software you need to install on BOTH machines. By the way, it is sooo slow to do this. Your best bet is to use an ethernet crossover cable. This will connect both PC's together utilizing your ethernet card and is way cheaper.

Is there a way to direct connect to a computer on your network to download a file?
Q. my rooomate has some large database files i need to get from him, we share a wirless connection through a router. is there anyway way i can type his ip address or something and connect to his computer and download the stuff rather than buying some CD-Rs and burning them?

A. Setup a wireless network on both systems. Then you can share between them. Make sure your Workgroup name is the same and have names for the PCs. Then make a sharing folder specifically for sharing on each PC.

Q. I've got two Win 2003 R2 Servers, 2 different domain controllers. How can I share files between them using a connectin on their second NICs? I tried to bridge the connections, the servers respont at ping but I don't know how to share files between the 2 servers using the second NIC on both servers. is that possible? thanks

A. Hi - this is quite a complex question, so I will outline some basic ideas, but you may have to adapt them somewhat to your particular scenario... To start with bridging the NICs is NOT what you want to do. Bridging a NIC is something that you do with two NICs on one machine, it allows the machine to join two physical network segments together. You can find more info on bridging at (this article is aimed at XP, but the principals are the same). I assume that you want to have a dedicated connection between the two machines... To begin with you need to connect the two servers together - this can be done with a crossover cable if they are physically near each other, otherwise if you have managed switches you could create a vlan for the two… [cont.]
