A floppy disk is a data storage medium that is composed of a disk of thin, flexible ("floppy") magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell. Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive or FDD, the initials of which should not be confused with "fixed disk drive", which is another term for a (nonremovable) type of hard disk drive. Invented by IBM, floppy disks in 8-inch (200 mm), 5¼-inch (133.35 mm), and 3½-inch (90 mm) formats enjoyed many years as a popular and ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange, from the mid-1970s to the late 1990s. While floppy disk drives still have some limited uses, especially with legacy industrial computer equipment, they have now been largely superseded by USB flash drives, external hard disk drives, CDs, DVDs, and memory cards. From Google News Search: "Floppy disks" How to make the floppy disks work? Q. I have a whole pack of floppy disks and I need them so I can format my pc but none of them works, or at least I don't know what I am doing :( I've tried formatting them but no luck either. Basically the computer doesn't recognize them but it won't format them either. Please answer A.S.A.P Asked by Johnny - Fri Jun 19 00:14:53 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Assuming that you have drive connected correctly and your computer has the drivers for it, this is an easy fix. (If you can read data from a floppy disk, your good) Floppy Disks have a small black sliding tab in one corner on the end of the diskette that does not have the metal jacket. Push it one way, your can read and write to the diskette; the other way is read only. If the disk doesn't work, move the tab, and try again Answered by Dragonfire - Fri Jun 19 00:30:28 2009 How can I retrieve files from some old 5 1/4" floppy disks? Q. I've got some files on old 5 1/4" floppy disks. I need to get them transferred to some format I can use -- CD-ROM or even a diskette. I no longer have a drive that will read them, and I don't know anyone who does. Asked by brightonrockgg - Sat May 31 14:32:58 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Given the likely age of the discs, changes are the data is now unreadable anyway. Try a local PC store / ebay see if you can find a 2nd hand drive, but best of luck. Floppy disc, most unreliable disc around, and the 5 1/4 were worse than 3 1/2 for losing data Answered by stu_the_kilted_scot - Sat May 31 14:44:10 2008 Can any of you think of a creative use for 3.5 floppy disks?
Q. I just can't bear to trash them, even though I no longer have a system to use them, nor the 5.25 disks I still possess. But surely somebody out there can think of a creative project? Asked by Andrea F - Mon Jul 2 21:01:08 2007 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments A. Make a table top. You could use them as mosaic tiles and top the table with glass, whole or broken to pieces. It would be a cool computer desk. Answered by Maddy Jinx - Mon Jul 2 21:03:43 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Floppy disks" |
