What is the best file compression software?
Q. I have a massive file that is about 8GB. I made it a zip file and that brought it down to about 6GB but I need it to be less then 4GB. I need the best compression program that can compress files to the maximum lowest possible size!!! Please don't give me a program that splits the file into many different files. I need to keep the compressed file together and back it up on one disk.

A. The open source option is 7 zip. Depending on what type of file it is, it may not be possible to get it as small as you are wanting.

How can we mark our file cabinet when people take files out?
Q. I work for an attorney and at our office and we are having MAJOR problems with our files. Someone (including myself) takes files out and then someone else needs that same file and we do not have a way to mark it in the cabinet that someone has that file. Can someone please help? I have thought about laminating a sheet of paper and some how making a holder and making like an old library card to "check-out" the file then just leave the paper in the cabinet. Please let me know of your ideas! A.S.A.P.

A. Use half a manilla folder. Keep a stack by the file cabinet. The check out card system works really well as long as people fill out the card. On the manilla folder put the clients name, id # and who took the file each time someone takes one.

How can I file another W2 form to taxes from another job after I already filed my first one?
Q. My dad filed my taxes for my and he completed it and filed it, but he didn't see that I had 2 W2 forms since I switched jobs in the middle of the year last year. He said he tried to put it in but it wouldn't let him for some reason. Can I just file another one by its self or what do I have to do?

A. Do this all with paper forms!! Make a copy of what you already sent in. Get forms 1040X and another 1040. Refigure your taxes on the new 1040 form including the total amounts from both W2. Now, on the form 1040x enter the numbers from each of the 1040 forms. Do the calculation as required on 1040x. Send in the 1040x and the additional W2 along with your check if need be.

How can I file a grievance against the CEO of my company?
Q. My co-workers and I are filing a grievance against the CEO of our company. Our business is owned by a larger corporation so we contacted his direct supervisor at the corporate office. She replied to us by saying we have to follow the Grievance Procedure for our facility which states the grievance must be filed through our department director (which it has), and then through the CEO. So we are told that before we can file through her, the CEO has to make a decision on it. I cant believe it is fair to say we have to file with the CEO when the grievance is against the CEO. Does anyone know what we can do?

If you actually read the publication that everyone is referring to, you will see that Judy is correct. Allow me to explain. First of all, it should be obvious by now that you absolutely can NOT claim HoH regardless what state you lived in. Back in 2004 and earlier, you may have been able to do so, but since 2005, the laws changed in regard to unrelated children. Second of all, everyone is saying that your girlfriend's child is your girlfriends Qualifying Child. That is not necessarily true. What happens when you file bankruptcy nowadays?
Q. I hear it is very hard to file for the type of bankruptcy where they abolish all of your debt. However, what about the type of bankruptcy where you pay back some of your debt? If you file this type of bankruptcy, will you definitely get accepted, even if you make a high income? How much of your debt do they make you pay back and in what timeframe? How much does it cost to file for bankrutpcy nowadays? Do you have to pay a lawyer up front? Does a lawyer guarantee you will be accepted for filing bankruptcy? THANKS!

A. Actually, a bankruptcy that wipes out all your debt is not much harder than before, it just requires much more documentation and there is an income "threshold" (it's a bit of a sliding scale depending on a variety of factors). If you make below the median income you can definitely file said bankruptcy (known as a chapter 7). Chapter 13, the type where you pay back some of the debt, is what you have to do if you have a high income and need to file bankruptcy. It is possible to have to pay back 100% of your debt if you really make a lot of money, so much that your disposable income for the next 60 months would be sufficient to pay off all of your debt. You only get accepted assuming you comply with every rule and requirement. You have… [cont.]

Can you file your taxes MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY in a community property state?
Q. We are not separated, but we would like to file separately because my husband is considered self-employed, but I would get a return if I filed mine separately. Can we do that? Do the tax forms (his and mine) have to be sent in at the same time, or can I send mine in now and his in on Apr 15?

A. Yes you can. Best to consult w/ an advisor because in some cases married filing separately is not going to bring you the highest return. You can send them in at different times.

A. You don't, any more than you "turn" a garage sale into a sign for a garage sale. A .torrent file is a file pointing to a tracker (an "address server") that has a list of people who have the actual file you're looking for. If you run your torrent program, and you have files available for uploading, the trackers you're connected to will make note of it - you don't have to do anything.

What happens when you don't file taxes, forget to apply for an extension, but still plan to file late?
Q. I planned to file an extension today because I'm missing a form for my tuition paid in 2007. Unfortunately, I'm very forgetful and didn't remember I needed to do it until 11:53 PM. Needless to say I missed the deadline. A: I feel like an idiot. B: I'm worried I can't file now and was expecting a refund. So, what are my options? Can I still file an extension? Can I just go ahead and file late? What kind of penalties are there?
Asked by Launa*Ray - Wed Apr 16 00:34:37 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Go to the IRS web site right now and file an extension. It's very easy and they are not gonna sweat you because your a couple of hours late, Christ its not even midnight on the west coast. Get the extension and you have till Oct 15th, with a penalty I believe of1.-2%. Don't worry just act. If you are due a refund they would just assume you never filed. If you think you are getting a refund you can file anytime without an extension with no penalty at all.

A. Although it's probably the last thing you want to do, you absolutely need to contact your ex-wife on this to determine her filing status and what (if any deductions she may be taking). There are some questions you need to answer before you proceed: - Have you legally filed for divorce or are you just separated? - Do you have legal representation? - Are their any children involved (this has a bearing on if you can file as Head of Household)? - Is the house only in her name? This is too complex an issue to not get some serious professional advice before you proceed (either a good divorce attorney and/or accountant). If you make assumptions on your filing status without knowing for sure what your ex is doing the IRS will become the "refere [cont.]

A. You just need to keep records--they don't have to be fancy or look official, they just need to be accurate. So, if you buy at a garage sale, record what you bought, for how much, and when you sell, record what you sold, for how much. Then, track your other legitimate expenses. There are excellent websites which explain what constitutes a legitimate expense. Add up all your costs (purchase prices, other expenses, ebay charges, paypal charges, shipping, whatever). Add up all your sales. The difference between these two numbers is income and is taxable, exactly as other income is taxable. You are actually self-employed, running a small business. As a self-employed individual, you can set up retirement accounts, and do all the other… [cont.]

What makes one eligible to file exempt on taxes?
Q. I am a student, and my aunt told me to file exempt just because I will get more money now from my low paying job than to file for tax refunds. But the legality of it all scares me. What makes someone eligible to file exempt? and if you wrongfully file exempt what will happen?
Asked by BonneChance - Mon Dec 10 15:48:39 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. From the W-4 instructions. You can only file "exempt" for 2007 if a) you owed no taxes in 2006 and b) you expect to owe no taxes in 2007 and c) if you are depedent, you must have less than $300 in non-wage income such as interest. Look at your numbers. If you are a dependent and have no interest income from college accounts, you can earn up to $5350 before you would owe income tax. If you expect to earn less, then you can file exempt. (If you are an adult, the number is $8750.)

Q. I know these two people who are fighting over who gets to file the kid on their tax returns. What if one of them files first, and the other tries later on? What will happen? Will there be an investigation to see who should really be able to file the kid or will they just tell the person that someone already filed that kid? Please tell me.

A. Whoever files first will get the refund for that child. At my tax office, the second person's return wouldn't be accepted until the child was removed from their return. BUT this is not the end of the story. If the person who files second - and didn't get the deduction for the child - was the one who rightfully was supposed to claim the child, they can 'do battle' through the IRS to show that they should have been able to claim the child and the first person was NOT supposed to claim the child. This gets the first person into trouble with the IRS, too.

A. Actually , the IRS can help. Go to IRS website To ask questions & get appropriate forms. Also, a tax preparation service (H&R Block etc) can help you w/ forms & filing. Keep a ledger of all income & expenditures Save all your business related expense receipts.( busness cards, recording media, equipment, performance insurance ...everything) Business expenses are tax deductible. You can file as an independent contractor in which case it is your responsibility to report & pay taxes on income. If you must or choose to incorporate, the rules change. A financial advisor or tax preparer can get you on right track esp if it is your sole source of income.

A. You need to determine if you are a US resident for tax purposes or not. You need to allocate your income as US-source (any days you worked in the US). India Income that residents of India receive for performing personal services in the United States during the tax year as independent contractors or self-employed individuals (independent personal services) is exempt from U.S. income tax if the residents: Are present in the United States for no more than 89 days during the tax year, and Do not have a fixed base regularly available to them in the United States for performing the services. If they have a fixed base available, they are taxed only on income attributable to the fixed base. Income that residents of India receive for… [cont.]

How to divide a large wmv file into independently playable smaller files?
Q. I've dled Gsplit, but the directions state that smaller files it creates cannot be independently played. Is there a utility that can break a large wmv file into smaller files that can be independently played?

A. WMV files have header information, so you have to use a special splitting software, that preserves header information about the media. you may try this freeware video converter with splitter functionality
