File sharing is the practice of distributing or providing access to digitally stored information, such as computer programs, multi-media (audio, video), documents, or electronic books. It may be implemented in a variety of storage, transmission, and distribution models. Common methods are manual sharing using removable media, centralized computer file server installations on computer networks, World Wide Web-based hyperlinked documents, and the use of distributed peer-to-peer (P2P) networking.

The increasing popularity of the mp3 music format in the late 1990s led to the release and growth of Napster and other software designed to aid in the sharing of electronic files. Other popular networks include Gnutella, Gnutella2, eDonkey2000, the now-defunct Kazaa network, and BitTorrent.

Many file sharing programs and services have been shut down due to litigation by groups such as the RIAA and MPAA. During the early 2000s, the fight against copyright infringement expanded into lawsuits against individual users of file sharing software.

The economic impact on media industries is disputed; although publishers and copyright holders claim economic damage, some studies have suggested that file sharing is not the primary cause of declines in sales. File sharing remains widespread, with mixed public opinion about the morality of the practice for commercial material.

What webhost will allow for hosting of a filesharing website?
Q. What webhost will ill be able to host a file sharing website?

A. That depends on what you mean by `filesharing`. If it's just a bittorrent tracker, a share/winny hash database, a listing of ed2k links or usenet bins, then you can use Santrex. They allow warez links. You're not gonna find a host that outright says that they will let you *host* warez though. Santrex: If you're looking to host warez, you will, in fact, want a dedicated server somewhere, preferably offshore or in China or Malaysia. You could look into hosts that use Unicom backbone. Not to speak against Unicom or anything, but they're not gonna go out of the way to stop you, especially if you live overseas (ie. not in PRC). (zh) (en) (en/zh) (HK) (LU) Not warez friendly, but is one of the most popular seedbox providers, so… [cont.]

Please Help ??? What is the average filesharing speed on a home network through a wireless modem?
Q. have 2 wireless computers, one a desktop the other a laptop. I have them connected through a wireless modem and both running the internet. I have set up file sharing through windows and am able to acces and share files between both computers. My question is what should the speed be when transfering files from one computer to the other through home networking in windows. And have set up a home network using the networking wizard through windows and selecting each computer is connected to the internet through a residential gateway,, this i think meaning my wireless modem ( an orange livebox ) what should be the speed i get when transfering files between computers ?? they both have excellent signal as the modem is just at the other end of… [cont.]

A. That does seem slow. How are you measuring the transfer speed? I would recommend using a standard application like robocopy from Microsoft for your tests. It's tempting to start a "windows copy" from folder to folder and check the clock, but it's not really reliable on the timer. Plus if you make changes, you want a reliable baseline for comparison. Also, place the computers in close proximity to one another when you perform the test, so that any wireless anomalies present (or absent!) will affect both machines, not just one. I did this test, since I have never bothered before. Both laptops have solid wireless performance from what I've seen. Both are 802.11G implementations. I was able to copy a 41MB file in 38 seconds. I tested… [cont.]
