Napster was an online music file sharing service created by Shawn Fanning while he was attending Northeastern University in Boston. The service operated between June 1999 and July 2001. Its technology allowed people to easily share their MP3 files with other participants, bypassing the established market for such songs and thus leading to massive copyright violations of music and film media as well as other intellectual property. Although the original service was shut down by court order, it paved the way for decentralized peer-to-peer file distribution programs, which have been much harder to control. The service was named Napster after Fanning's hairstyle-based nickname. Napster's brand and logo were purchased after the company closed its doors and continue to be used by a pay service.

Why do Napster songs expire on my mp3 player?
Q. I had a paid subscription to Napster and put songs on my mp3 player. Now they won't play because they are expired somehow. How in the world does Napster control the songs I have on my mp3 player and what can I do about this? Thanks.

A. Napster embeds DRM into the music files. When you stop paying for Napster's monthly service, the software timer eventually runs out. If you're still a paying napster member, then all you have to do is plug your mp3 player back into the computer and turn on napster software. This will allow napster to reset the "timer" that's embedded in the music files on you mp3 player. Itunes uses a similar system in order to rent movies to customers. The movie rental file has a timer in it that lasts for 1 or 2 days and then the files is disabled.

On Napster do the 30 second songs become full songs when you download them to your MP3 player?
Q. I just started using Napster. Some of the songs on their are 30 second samples. My question is, when you download them onto your MP3 player is it the full version or just the same 30 second version that is on Napster?

A. Only if you're a paying Napster subscriber.

Can you transfer Napster songs to your iTunes library to put on your iPod?
Q. I love my iPod, but then if I have Napster I get unlimited music instead of 10 songs a month. Would I be able to keep my iPod and have Napster instead?

A. I do it this way too. Love my Napster. Convert your songs to mp3 using an outside program (iTunes can get wonky with it) You can try this program
