What is the lifetime of a Volkswagen Passat?
Q. How many miles can an avg Passat diesel survive. I have seen cars on autotrader with 200k+ miles and they are still described as in 'good condition'. Personal experiences are welcome!

A. A friend of mine had one and they are known for their longevity. Obviously anything you buy in autotrader can be dodgy, but they are the one vehicle that has this reputation for the long miles.

How much will it cost to get a Passat's climatronic climate control system repaired or replaced?
Q. It looks as if my climatronic control is not working properly on my Passat 2001. It does not display the temperature outside. It just comes up as -- C (celcious) It usually reads in F (Fahrenheit). Sometimes, very unusually now, the air kicks in and blows out really cool air. That is why I think there is some sort of sensor problem. Otherwise right now it blows out mostly hot air since it is summer. Does anyone know how much something like this would cost to get fixed at the dealership or elsewhere? I kind of want to know how much I should be spending. Any feedback or experiences would be great! Thanks!

A. I've worked in Volkswagen dealership service departments on and off over a 25 year period, so perhaps I can offer some insight into the situation. Normally, the language change (metric - celcious; english farhenheit) is set thru the digital computer display on the instrument cluster using the control buttons for the menu. (use the owners manual to understand how to set the display, if I try to explain it, you'd probably be more confused). It is possible that the temp sensors that sense the interior temperature aren't working properly. You can override the system some what by selecting maximum cold and have the selector display blowing air out of the dash vents (with the arrow pointing towards the face on the digital display) to… [cont.]

How do you change the ignition keyset on a 96 Passat?
Q. When starting my 96 Passat, I turn the key, and lately have to push the key upward to get the starter to turn over. This is apparently a common VW fault. I want to replace the keyset myself, but need instructions.

A. you have to have the tumbler set and it is very involved work you are best to take it to the dealer or a locksmith.

How do I stop my Passat from beeping when I lock it?
Q. Whenever I use the remote key switch to lock my 2006 Passat, it gives a little beep to show that the alarm is engaged. I would rather it just flashed the lights. But I looked through the owner's manual and on-line and couldn't find any way to turn off the beep. Any suggestions?

A. On your steering wheel there should be eight buttons on it. On the right there are four. A button with three bars (top left) will let you into a setup menu. Go into convenience then into "ATA Confirm" and turn it off. The "ATA confirm" is the honking sound when you lock your car. BTW I own a 2006 Jetta and this is how I got my car to stop that honk when I locked the door. Im quite sure the 2006 Passat has the same type of steering wheel and menu system as the 2006 Jetta.

Why is my 1999 VW Passat Wagon shuddering and failing to develop full power?
Q. My 1999 VW Passat wagon, four cylinder, has a flashing "check engine" light. The engine shakes the entire car and fails to develop full power. What is the major difference between a 2010 VW Passat and a 2010 Audi A4?
Q. Hello folks. I wanted to see if anyone could tell me the "significant" differences between a 2010 VW Passat and a 2010 Audi A4 (non quattro). I am in the market for a new car and I am considering the the A4 but several people have mentioned that it is just a very luxurious sporty Passat and even has the same engine. Is this true? Can someone elaborate if possible?

A. I'd go for an audi if the price difference isn't that great. The major difference is in handling and smoother ride. Specially if you intend to go on long trips, the audi is more comfortable after a long trip and less tiring. I cannot tell if its the smoother suspension, seats, or what. Thats my opinion.

How much will it cost to replace the transmission oil on a 2003 Passat?

A. Should not cost more than $250, plus your towing bill. Do not start or drive the car, the tiptronic tranny can cost upwards of $7000, nothing at a VW dealer is cheap.

How to clean the drain plugs on a 1999 Passat?
Q. I am seeing small amounts of water dripping from the headliner of my Passat. The dealership told me that it's the drain plugs that might be clogged. They say that they can clean them but I would like to know where these drain plugs are so I can do the unclogging myself whenever.

A. The problem is a common one among sunroof model VW's (I assume it must be a sunroof/moon roof model vehicle), as the drains for the sunroof clogg easily. Normally, the ones that usually clog are the ones at corners facing the windshield; there are two other drains at the rear of the sunroof, but those generally don't have much trouble; if they do, you often have to take the headliner down to service them. If the stains or water drip at the frnt door area of the headliner , open the sunroof and both frnt doors first, then take a cup of water and pour it at the right or left frnt corners of the sunroof at the bend or curve in the roof. Look down and you should see the drain opening in the edge of the sunroof floor pan... the water should… [cont.]

how much does it cost to have a master break cylinder professionally replaced in a 95 passat?
Q. The break pedal is pushing way down in order to stop the car and I assume it is something to do with the master cylinder or a leak in the breaking system. It is a 1995 volkswagen passat, v6, with abs. I am just curious as to the general price range for having a repair like this done, parts and labor. Thanks.
Asked by jkloftin7 - Mon Dec 11 13:59:43 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Assuming that it is the master cylinder, expect about 300$ for the part from Volkswagen, and about 3-5 hours of labor. Roughly 600$ total, not including pads, rotors, shoes, etc that should be replaced at the same time. In your shoes, if I was not able to diagnose and test myself, I would have a brake shop inspect the system and give you their recommendation before going in and saying "Hey, do the master cylinder." A job like that, if you walk in and say hey, I need the master cylinder done, they're going to smile, nod, and do it whether or not you need it. All you want to say when you go into the shop is that your brakes feel funny, could you please inspect them? It could be something as simple as the fluid is old and needs to be flushed. [cont.]

A. Your car has 190HP, and the new one has 200HP. The 2.0 engine in the Passat is also a very, very good engine- its used in the Audi TT. The new V6 is 280HP, and in its AWD form quite a quick car for the price. There are obviously better performance deals, but few that are as family and winter (AWD) friendly.

What causes condensation on the windshield of a VW Passat?
Q. The windshield (especially on the driver's side) of my 2003 Volkswagen Passat has frequent condensation that is really hard to clear. I have seen some similar questions, and the suggestion that it could be a clogged drain or filter, but I'm curious to see if anyone has other ideas on what is causing it and how to fix it.
Asked by Nick C - Sun Dec 23 13:20:23 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Usually when condensation forms on a car window it means there is water engress in to the passenger compartment. The first thing to do is to look under each of the floor mats to give you an idea where the water is coming in from. The most common area on a newish unrusted cars is the windscreen is not sealed properly allowing water entry.

How to reset oil service indicator for 2007 VW Passat?
Q. I have a 2007 Volkswagen Passat. I recently had the oil changed, not at the dealer, and the service light is still on. How can I turn this off without taking it to the dealership?

A. With the doors closed put the key in the ignition. Hold down the trip odometer reset button. Turn the key to the on position. You will see the service indicator light (wrench). Press the minute adjustment button. Release the trip odometer reset button.
