Tiny light bulb in 2005 Passat headlight?
Q. What kind is that tiny little light bulb in passat headlights thats right next to the high beam that turns on when you turn on your headlights?

A. I'm not exactly positive, but I believe it's a 194 bulb. Thats the "city light" that comes on when the parking lights or headlights are on.

2003 Volkswagen Passat Headlight issue?
Q. I have been told that to replace the low beam bulb, it is $140.00. Does anyone know? He said it is because they are HID lites. But seems a little ridiculous to me that a basic part like a headlight bulb could cost so much.

A. The HID headlights are very expensive; I hate to tell you this, but that's about right. The HID headlights was an expensive option, mainly on the all wheel drive Passat or on the now departed Phaeton. Now, if you're still under the warranty, 4 years, 50,000 miles; the headlight bulbs and dash lighting is still covered under the warranty (all other bulbs are considered to be wear and tear items and have coverage for only 12 months or 12,000). The HID bulbs are special; I don't recommend that you replace them with regular headlight bulbs. The headlights assemblies have special lenses designed to work with the HID lenses and if you put regular bulbs in it, you'll notice a huge difference in what you can see. Most dealerships will… [cont.]

How do I change the driver side headlight on a 2003 Passat?
Q. There is an "air box" in the way.. I called the VW dealership, and they told me I have to bring it in. They want $210 to install each headlight. Can anyone give me some instructions on how to replace the headlight? The bulbs went out on both sides of my Passat. It sucks!
Asked by justaphxboy - Fri Jan 5 21:43:02 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. both headlamps out at the same time is common. on the back of the lamp there is a rubber cap that just slips on. remove the cap and rotate the bulbs counter clockwise to remove. leave the wiring connecter on the bulb to hold the retainer on to make removal and installation easier. also inspect the yellow and brown wires to the bulbs for signs of excessive heat. somtimes the wires will melt and cause a poor connection.

How much would it cost to replace a headlight bulb at a repair shop?
Q. I have a 2006 VW Passat and I can only get to the passenger side bulb but I can't figure out the driver's side even though it should be the same. I went to Autozone and 2 different people can't figure it out. So if I bring it to a repair shop (not dealer) how much roughly would it cost? Also, do you think they would let me buy the bulbs from Autozone and have them put them on? Thanks

A. way more then it should. i dont even know if someone will do that for you as it is like almost too minor. which means that anyone who will do it for you is gonna rape you on it and totally over charge you. or they will try to get you to get something else fixed while you are there.

2000 VW Passat Headlight?
Q. A few months ago I was in a parking garage and parked in the last spot by the wall. Just my luck that I ran into the wall and scratched my fender and cracked my headlight. It's not a severe crack. there's no pieces missing, so it's not that serious. But I'm thinking of reselling the car sometime soon and was hoping someone could tell me if it's worth it to replace the plastic for the headlight. How much would it cost me to replace the plastic surrounding the headlight? Not the bulb, just the plastic part.
Asked by Molly Parkoure - Fri Sep 5 19:26:24 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Sorry to say the plastic lens is not sold by itself. You can probably buy a good used headlight on ebay or a new one for really cheap at Good luck

Changing xenon passenger headlight on a 2006 VW passat, what are my options?
Q. The passenger headlight went out in my passat and the dealership wants around $500! It's a xenon bulb and apparently they need to remove the bumper to change it...do I have any options or do I have to pony up the $500 to the dealership?? So I actually got really lucky because I had a ton of body work done at a body shop and everything they did is covered under a lifetime warranty...they did have to remove part of the bumper to fix the problem but the bulb wasn't burnt out, just a loose wire. Thanks for your help, now I know for next time if the bulb burns out I'll go any place other than the dealership!

A. Take it to someone thats not a dealer but still expect to pay a lot of money. Its not a simple $10 dollar bulb in the bi-xenon headlamps that come on the cars now. It also may be the igniter that has gone bad and not the bulb. Go to the parts department and ask how much the bulb costs then go to the service department and find out how much the labor is. It should only take at most 1 hour of repair time to fix it. (probably not even 30 mins)

Any newer Jetta owners made any headlight modifications?
Q. Looking at the Jetta, but I don't like the halogen lamps and would rather have the Passat bulbs. Any good mods to replace the Jettas?

A. i have a 06 2.5 jetta and asked the dealer about headlight kits and they didn't make any for it yet. might want to call a dealer and ask if they have one. but be warned any thing you change on it voids all warranties. that's why i didn't go w/ after market kits or change anything.

What replacement headlights do I need for a 2005 VW Passat?
Q. One of my daytime running lights is out, but I'm a bit confused as to what bulbs do what in the Passat. On both Low-Beam and Hi-Beam are listed, but rather then spend $140+ on both sets, just wondering which ones I need? The description on both says "If your vehicle has HID headlights, these bulbs only replace your running lights" I do NOT have HID lights, just stock headlights in the vehicle. To reply to Biff's answer... yes, I do know about lookup books. The problem is that the headlight enclosure on the Passat's has TWO bulbs in each, one being the driving lights and one being what looks like a regular bulb (non-halogen). The bulb that is burned out on my car IS the halogen bulb. The confusing part is that some of the… [cont.]

Both brake lights on VW PASSAT (2003) will not go on with headlights at night? Help?
Q. I dont think this is a burnt out bulb issue because they BOTH are not going on at nights, when I have the headlights on. They work in the day, when I press the brakes. I thought it was a fuse, but I pushed all of them back in securely and it didnt work. Stupid Pep Boys want 50 bucks just to LOOK at it? Help? Any ideas!!!???
Asked by mbz2828 - Sun Mar 12 13:19:37 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Check for a bad/weak/disconnected ground wire to the rear brake/tail light assembly. Try turning headlights during daylight and see if problem is present. You may also have a dirty brake light fuse (this is rare), clean it. There may be a bad tail?brake light sensor module too. But that gets more complicated. Try applying an extra ground wire to tail light assembly if brakes work ok you have found the problem. good luck

HID Decision help for VW?
Q. Hi everyone I have a 2003 VW Passat as you probably know it has the halogen projector housings for the headlights. I really like the benefits and looks of HID lights and would like to install them in my car. The only problem I have is that I understand that they are illegal to install in a car that didn't come from the factory with HID's. About six months ago I bought a HID kit from DDMTuning.com I got the 35w 6,000k color rating. I had them in there for one day and removed them. I got flashed by peoples high beams a few times and just didn't want to cause a accident. Now from reading I would like to try HID's again in my car but this time buying them from retro solutions.com and get the 35w 4300k color rating. I also would be more… [cont.]

A. With your car having projectors (rather than reflectors) from the factory, you are ahead of the game with being able to retrofit HIDs without them being obnoxious to other drivers. 4300k bulbs are actually going to be brighter than the 6000k bulbs you had previously. Unfortunately with a North American-spec headlamp, you are not going to have a clean cut-off, even with projectors. Park your car about 20 feet away from a garage door or wall, and aim the headlights so that focal point of the light is a little over 3 feet off the ground, and you should be fine. I am running 4300k bulbs currently in my GTI, but in european code (e-code) spec headlights. This makes a huge difference, and I would recommend going this route at some point… [cont.]
