How does a water pump work, mechanically?
Q. I've always wondered how a water pump moves water through a pipe. A fan moves air by spinning a propeller-like set of blades, but does a water pump work the same way? Or is there some other kind of mechanism inside the pump that draws water from one place and pushes it to another?
Asked by Curlyfry - Tue May 8 09:18:02 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are different types of pumps. The type most commonly used to pump water is the centrifugal pump, which operates pretty much the same way an air fan propels air. Additionally, a centrifugal water pump uses a volute or chamber that surrounds the impellor or the blades to direct the flow of the water, converting the flow energy that it imparts to the water into pressure energy.

Can a pool pump be used to pump water from a tank to a dwelling?
Q. Have a shack next to a water pump, and the old pump there seems to be knackered. Have an old pool pump which I thought about using in place of it, but suspect it may not be suitable, as it would be constantly pumping water, and not sure what might happen with the taps turned off! Trying to find look around on the net for some tips (on even how to troubleshoot the existing pump), but there doesnt seem to be much about. Any Ideas? For my first question I have raised here, I am very impressed with the responses and thank all who have provided an answer. My concerns with a simple swap have been confirmed and I have a few other ideas to work with now. Have a whole bunch of other questions now, think I will raise them separately.

A. Most Pool pumps are not designed to pump up, they are what is called a circulatory pump. You can buy a cheap pump for 30.00 on up at Harbour Freight tools, or you can have the old pump rebuilt.

A. check the connections on the wiring on the plug and also check to see if the motor will actually run it may be burnt out, that's the most used one of all and usually its the one that goes bad first,it could just be a bad motor on it,good luck.

How do I take the water pump off 2004 impala after Ive removed all the bolts and took the pulley off?
Q. Im trying to take my water pump off but im having problems. Ive took all the bolts off the pulley and the water pump it self. How can I get it off now??
Asked by lrgboy06 - Mon Jan 12 18:53:55 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you've taken all the bolts out and removed the pulley and it won't come off, chances are its stuck on by the gasket. It's no great problem just give it a few taps with a wood / rubber mallet to remove it. If you don't have a mallet to hand you can use a hammer and a piece of wood. Don't strike it directly with a hammer though, it would shatter. Put the wood against it and hit the wood with the hammer. Once it is off make sure all of the gasket has been removed and the surface is smooth before fitting a new one.

How to pump water from a water source to a water tank?
Q. We are doing a project, and it's aimed for a community in Mali where they have a 10 month dry season. They have a swamp where they can extract water from. So we are looking to design a water pump that would feed the water into the tank. Does anyone know where could get more information on these types of water pumps, or has information on them? Thanks
Asked by Matty77 - Mon Oct 15 14:47:44 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Its been 20+ years since I last designed a water system (that was similar in many respects) so I don't remember the vendors. But you are either going to want a submersible pump or a verticle centrifugal pump to pull the water out of the swamp. Just google these and also google potable water pump. You are going to have other issues such as head, flow and power requirements. Other issues to worry about are your intake system and any screens and strainers to keep stuff out of area around the pump. Good luck. ... As an add on, you might also want, depending on your system, to look at a portable fire water pump. It will get you thinking.

Does a water pump has to leakin to be bad?How can I tell if my water pump is workin?
Q. I took out the thermostat, filled coolant level to upmost, & my car still overheats, & it doesnt leak ne where. How can I tell if the water pump is workin?
Asked by Aj - Mon Feb 25 22:03:19 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Overheating normally would require a failed water pump. Some liquid leaking out of the weep hole normally just indicates that the pump is going to fail. Does the water pump make a clicking sound? An abnormal pump sound also is an indicator of a pump that is starting to fail. Verify that the coolant is full. If full, check the fan. If the fan is not turning on between 185 to 225, the temperature sensor may be bad. Also verify that the thermostat is installed in the correct direction. If installed backwards, the engine will overheat quickly. (This is an easy mistake.) Good luck!

What keeps my water pump for my mobile home keep shutting on and off quickly?
Q. The gauge goes up to 45 lbs. pressure, then drops quickly to zero, then pump comes on again, runs maybe 5-6 seconds and shuts off? No water pressure at faucets in house! The pipes aren't frozen because it's been above freezing here in Florida.

A. the pipe going from the well to the house may be froze up. try checking if your heat tape is working maybe try putting a heater by the pipe and trying in a hour or two. in the meantime i'd shut the pump off so you don't damage it. HTH!!

What is a water pump in a car? How much is it to replace?
Q. And if it needs to be replaced, does that spell trouble for a car? I see a car I might like to buy, but the ad says that the water pump needs to be replaced. Someone please enlighten me. Thanks.

A. Most water pumps are fairly cheap either new or rebuilt. Get it replaced it keeps the engine cooled off and prevents overheating. Personally I would avoid that car unless the owner replaces the pump first. The cost is only $100 - $200 for most cars. By him replacing it you will be able to see how the car runs after, any rattling or knocking means it is toast already and not worth any more than scrap iron.

A. I own 2 Pennzoil 10 Minute Oil Change Centers & have been in business since 1984. If we performed a service & that service wasn't done correctly or caused damage due to faulty parts, any damage would be covered 1 way or the other. You need not let this go, BE NICE. More will get accomplished with a customer that is being understanding rather than someone that comes in screaming. Somewhere along the line of your situation someone needs to cover your damages that are a DIRECT result of the part/work performed. If these people are worth a salt, they will cover your issue. Now, keep in mind if your belt had 50k on it (don't expect a new cow for a cow that's almost dead...make sense?), you need to bend a little, maybe a split of costs. Remember, [cont.]

A. You don't need a Fire Dept. grade pump. You don't want to try and put out all the fires, just the one on your house or neighbors, right??? Take a look around at utility pumps. In the US(I realize you are not in the US) you can get a usable pump, hose and nozzle from either Northern Tool or Harbor Freight Tools. When my wife and I lived in the mountains, almost everyone of our neighbors had pumps, or old retired fire trucks. There was no fire deparment where we lived, and the forest service would take entirely to long to get there.

A. WJ Water Pump Replacement 4.0L I6 If you are like me, then replacing a water pump doesn't sound like that much fun, but you would rather do it yourself than pay someone else to do it. Replacing the water pump on your WJ isn't going to be that hard, but a little help with the steps would probably be nice. This write up will hopefully give you some pointers that could save you some time in the long run and make things a little easier for you. 1) Diagnosis. First thing you probably have noticed is that puddle of antifreeze on the ground in the morning. Check your hoses first and try to determine where the leak is coming from. If it is indeed dripping down the front of the engine block, check your hoses on the water pump and thermostat… [cont.]

How do I remove the water pump drive pulley on a 98 Cadillac Deville?
Q. This is not the tensioner pulley or the pulley on the water pump this is the pulley attached to the engine drive. I can not get it off and I need to in order to replace the head gasket. Please help. There are 3 bolts on the inside of the block cover, but none on the pulley itself. I have loosened the bolts on the inside as far as possible and still it will not come undone. A. Go to the local hardware store, or a farm & fleet store and you can get your pump. Since the wll is that deep, I would get a well pump that pumps with enough head to do what you need... Lemme see.. I would put the pump so that its 10 feet above the bottom, so that when you draw down, (use it), it will have enough to use... Now, if you have a one storied house, then I would take the 50 feet of head from the well, pluss another ten feet for the first floor, plus, another 20 feet for pressure...80 feet of head should do it. (this will get the pump to pump the water past the well, into the house and past that if you use a hose outside... your Hardware store man should, if they know what they are doing, tell you this). It should pump into… [cont.]

Our water pump quit working and I was wondering how to fix it?
Q. I went to turn on the water in the kitchen and nothing came out. Figured it had to be the water pump because I didn't hear it kick on. How do I either turn the water pump back on or reset it?? I have never dealt with a water pump before! Help ASAP!
Asked by lisa_jenson@sbcglobal.net - Wed Jul 4 22:40:40 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You didn't say if it was above or below ground, so I will assume that we are talking above ground. First thing to do is check your circut breaker to be sure it is working properly and look for the reset button on the pump a volt meter will do this. Next check the regulator switch on the pump if this is bad it won't turn the pump off or on again use a volt meter. If this checks out then check the motor for power. You may have a loose connection or a short that is keeping it from working. By using a volt meter you will be able to track where the problem is. Another way to check to see if the motor is working is by disconnecting the wiring and wire the motor direct.

How do you replace a water pump in a 1995 Toyota Camry?
Q. My Camry is overheating and I am assuming it is the water pump. I already changed the thermostat and that was no help. When I turn the heater on to cool off the engine, it blows cold air or the temp of the air outside most of the time and seldomly hot air. I bought a water pump, but I am not sure if this is something I can do?
Asked by CrYsTaLiTe627 - Fri Jun 15 20:35:38 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Got to give you credit Crystal for even thinking of tackling this. You already did the thermostat, good for you! It can be a difficult to replace the pump. You have to remove belts and unless the new pump has a pulley on it you will have to take the pully off the old pump. You ought to get a Haynes or Clymer repair manual for the Camry and follow it step by step. If you are going to go through with it. BUT... it might not be the waterpump. Whenever a modern car overheats the 1st thing you want to rule out is a blown head gasket. Camry's are not known for blowing head gaskets though. It could be several other things. Like for instance the fan not turning on. You must put a diagnosis to the problem before you start replacing things. I found… [cont.]

Can a car water pump work at partial capicity or is a matter of it pumps or doesn't pump?
Q. The garage told me my water pump was pumping "weakly" and needs to be replaced.
Asked by land - Tue Oct 30 19:10:54 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A water pump can start to 'pump weakly' as the blades on the rotor wear out. That will reduce the amount of coolant that is being moved through the system. That causes the temperature to rise overall. Usually that does not happen before the bearing wears out. When that happens you will normally see some coolant dripping out of the weep hole of the pump if the pump is on the outside of the engine.

A. remove the top motor mount, release the tension on the belt tensioner by turning the center bolt counterclockwise, remove the serpentine belt (take note how it is routed), take the bolts out of the water pump that is holding it on. be sure to remove all of the old gasket. put rtv sealent on the new gasket and the block surface, install in reverse order. note: you might need a pry bar to line the motor up to reconnect the top motor mount.
