A. Without more information you could have anything from a pin hole in a hose, a clamp that needs to be tighten, a bad gasket, radiator cap, water pump or blown head gasket. I would test for the first two. Besides calling Klick & Klack on NPR for good but humorous advice; I would take the car to your trusted mechanic. Ask your friends if you don't know one. Ask the mechanic if a cooling system pressure test could be done and how much will it will cost. (This is a simple test where the radiator cap is replaced with a hand pump. The mechanic uses the pump to bring the cooling system pressure to the proper psi). If there's a leak, the pressure will drop and coolant should appear from somewhere. Generally the faster it drops, the bigger… [cont.]

Can I power a Water Pump for my Shower from a Lighting Circuit - UK?
Q. (This is a question regarding IEE Wiring Regulations and Part P of the Building Regulations in the UK.) I need to add a water pump to raise the water pressure to my shower. I want to install the pump in my loft which is where the water pipes run, but the only power currently up there is for an existing lighting circuit. Is it ok (i.e. does it satisfy Part P of the building regs, and IEE Wiring Regulations) to wire the Water Pump into this circuit?

A. check the connections on the wiring on the plug and also check to see if the motor will actually run it may be burnt out, that's the most used one of all and usually its the one that goes bad first,it could just be a bad motor on it,good luck.

How to pump water from a water source to a water tank?
Q. We are doing a project, and it's aimed for a community in Mali where they have a 10 month dry season. They have a swamp where they can extract water from. So we are looking to design a water pump that would feed the water into the tank. Does anyone know where could get more information on these types of water pumps, or has information on them? Thanks
Asked by Matty77 - Mon Oct 15 14:47:44 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Its been 20+ years since I last designed a water system (that was similar in many respects) so I don't remember the vendors. But you are either going to want a submersible pump or a verticle centrifugal pump to pull the water out of the swamp. Just google these and also google potable water pump. You are going to have other issues such as head, flow and power requirements. Other issues to worry about are your intake system and any screens and strainers to keep stuff out of area around the pump. Good luck. ... As an add on, you might also want, depending on your system, to look at a portable fire water pump. It will get you thinking.

What is a water pump in a car? How much is it to replace?
Q. And if it needs to be replaced, does that spell trouble for a car? I see a car I might like to buy, but the ad says that the water pump needs to be replaced. Someone please enlighten me. Thanks.
Asked by Holly - Wed Oct 18 22:11:00 2006 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most water pumps are fairly cheap either new or rebuilt. Get it replaced it keeps the engine cooled off and prevents overheating. Personally I would avoid that car unless the owner replaces the pump first. The cost is only $100 - $200 for most cars. By him replacing it you will be able to see how the car runs after, any rattling or knocking means it is toast already and not worth any more than scrap iron.

Why does my water pump have oil all over it?
Q. I have oil all over my water pump. I investigated when I saw a few drops of oil in the garage that showed up every few days. I then saw a drop of clean radiator fluid. Does oil come near or through the water pump? I have a 96 nissan maxima if that helps. There is no oil in the coolant. The coolant is green as new. The drips of the coolant are in a slightly different place from the drips of oil.
Asked by Deez - Wed Jan 24 17:12:25 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The first place a car will leak oil is usually the valve covers. Regular maintenance requires valve adjustments, and to do this, the valve covers come off a few times in 10 years. If you have a four syllable motor, the front of the valve cover is right above the water pump, so a valve cover leak would dribble down the water pump. Your water pump could be leaking (if you've never replaced it in the 10 years since your car was made). I'd bet you have both problems. I'm too soon old, and too late smart, so I've let water pumps go because "it's only leaking a little". When the shaft begins to get wobbly, it will let loose with a caBANG! and damage something when it flings off the fan. Moral to the story: Replace the water pump, and… [cont.]

Asked by Chukky - Sun Apr 6 12:44:29 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Basically, at least one idea, was to have the wind turn a horizontal shaft that was also a crank shaft. The crank would cause an up and down motion and was used to drive a long metal rod that went down into the well. On the end of the rod was a one-way valve. It would open on the down stroke and close on the up stroke thereby lifting out the water. I think I read there were over 50,000 of these in the western USA at one time. I live in Arizona and they are still standing all over but few are still working. They went out of vogue when George Westinghouse started selling electricity which had the advantage of being able to pump when the wind stalled. Google "western windmills pumps" or something similar and you can get tons of sites… [cont.]

How do you change a water pump on a 89 accord LXi?
Q. I am using the Haynes Manual, however the book shows it very simply. When i look in the engine, i have to remove three belts just to get to the water pump. Replacing the pump should be relatively straight forward. Getting to it is the problem. Reason why i want to change it, is because my car makes a rough knocking/gurgling sound when i accelerate or idle at a high rpm, and i think that my current water pump is clogged up and not allowing coolant to get through the engine block. Any suggestions out there?
Asked by Zone Defender - Thu Jul 27 15:50:02 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. if you hear a knocking sound it might be the idler pulley, not the water pump. If it is the water pump it should have been replaced when you replace the timing belt at approx 55k miles. You have to remove the timimg belt to replace the water pump. It is a major repair bill if you have someone do it.

A. You don't need a Fire Dept. grade pump. You don't want to try and put out all the fires, just the one on your house or neighbors, right??? Take a look around at utility pumps. In the US(I realize you are not in the US) you can get a usable pump, hose and nozzle from either Northern Tool or Harbor Freight Tools. When my wife and I lived in the mountains, almost everyone of our neighbors had pumps, or old retired fire trucks. There was no fire deparment where we lived, and the forest service would take entirely to long to get there.

Can an automotive water pump be used to supply power in reverse?
Q. I'm wondering an automotive water pump can run in reverse if supplied with pressurized water. If it can, then I could hook up an alternator to its pulley and theoretically get power from it. I'm researching alternative energy and am brainstorming different options to pump water into a storage tank (by windmill most likely), then to take the power from it... be it a water wheel, water pump, whatever. If you know if the pump works in reverse, please let me know. Sorry, not interested in guesses! Thanks! There are some really good answers here, but i need to be a little more specific. A. You didn't say if it was above or below ground, so I will assume that we are talking above ground. First thing to do is check your circut breaker to be sure it is working properly and look for the reset button on the pump a volt meter will do this. Next check the regulator switch on the pump if this is bad it won't turn the pump off or on again use a volt meter. If this checks out then check the motor for power. You may have a loose connection or a short that is keeping it from working. By using a volt meter you will be able to track where the problem is. Another way to check to see if the motor is working is by disconnecting the wiring and wire the motor direct.

Where can you buy a water pump?
Q. I'm not talking about for a car. Just the standard water pump for you house. Ours won't click on when it's supposed to. First we had to hit the tank itself, and now we have to tap the box on top (I'm assuming some sort of fuse box as there are wires coming out of it). It's getting ridiculous and I'm just ready to buy a new one, but I'm not sure where all you can buy one. We've discovered that for some reason, the switch won't do whatever (I failed basic electronics so bare with me, lol). The pump is about 15 years old and apparently it'll be cheaper and safer (and conserve more energy) to just buy a new one in the long run. And I promise I'm not getting near the wires or hitting it with anything but wood...if that helps at all. lol.… [cont.]

A. It's time for a new pump, this is not an appliance that you want to worry about or cut corners with. I would recommend a plumbing supply house that has a little better quality pump. Zoeller makes a very reliable submersible, you won't have to worry for another 15 years.
